Transforming Wound Healing and Aesthetic Medicine

RecoSMA® is an innovative laser-based technology developed by LINLINE Medical Systems. Unlike conventional lasers that rely on thermal effects, RecoSMA works through a unique non-thermal acoustic mechanism, triggering true tissue regeneration.

Here, ultra-short, high-energy pulses cause explosive ablation without heat diffusion, leaving surrounding tissue intact. The result is a precise laser-tissue interaction that stimulates reparative regeneration.

This pioneering approach has been successfully applied in chronic wound treatment, scar correction, and skin rejuvenation, offering new possibilities where traditional methods fall short.

Physics of the RecoSMA Effect

Explosive Vaporization & Shockwave Formation

  • Er:YAG (λ = 2940 nm) radiation is absorbed strongly by water, the main component of soft tissue.
  • With pulse durations shorter than the thermal diffusion time, tissue vaporizes before heat spreads.
  • The rapid phase transition generates high-pressure vapor expansion, which releases explosive shockwaves.

Acoustic Propagation & Cavitation

These shockwaves are acoustic in nature. As they travel through tissue, they mechanically deform it:

  • Compression as the wavefront approaches.
  • Expansion as it passes.
  • When expansion exceeds the intermolecular cohesion limit, bonds break and microscopic structures are disrupted — a process called cavitation.

Unlike thermal ablation, cavitation is purely mechanical and does not destroy the surrounding dermis or vasculature.

Spatially Modulated Microdestruction

To control the process, RecoSMA employs spatially modulated ablation:

  • Multiple micro-epicenters are formed at the skin surface.
  • Each generates an acoustic wave.
  • Waves propagate harmlessly until they interfere constructively.
  • At interference peaks, localized energy reaches cavitation thresholds, creating ultrasmall zones of microdestruction.

These micro-injuries are surrounded by intact tissue, ensuring safety and a rapid biological response.

Biological Outcomes

The physics-driven microdestruction acts as a biological trigger for regeneration:

  • Restart of the inflammatory phase – essential in chronic wounds where healing has stalled.
  • Neovascularization – stimulation of endothelial proliferation and new capillary networks, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery.
  • Fibroblast activation – synthesis of collagen and extracellular matrix in an organized structure, replacing scar tissue with functional dermis.
  • Neurogenesis – promotion of peripheral nerve regrowth, restoring sensation and function.

Histological studies show no coagulation necrosis and no fibrosis formation. Instead, tissue is replaced by new collagen and healthy structures, with improved microcirculation and trophism.

Clinical Relevance

Because the process is mechanical, not thermal, RecoSMA avoids the side effects of traditional ablative lasers:

  • No vascular destruction → no risk of necrosis.
  • No collagen denaturation → stronger, organized tissue regeneration.
  • No fibrosis → reduced scarring and recurrence.

Clinically, this translates to:

  • Skin rejuvenation and lifting without post-treatment risks
  • Chronic wound closure with restoration of functional skin and soft tissues.
  • Scarring prevention in immediate post-burn and post-traumatic treatment
  • Improved scar quality for mature scars

RecoSMA® represents a new class of regenerative laser medicine — safe, selective, and effective, with outcomes that move beyond repair toward complete tissue renewal.
